Prof Fels, McGorry join AFMH panel discussion on mental health reform

FELS, McGORRY LEAD COMMUNITY CONVERSATION ON GOVERNMENT RESPONSE TO AUSTRALIA’S MENTAL HEALTH CRISIS

Pre-eminent leaders in mental health reform Prof. Allan Fels and Prof. Patrick McGorry will headline a panel discussion on Thursday to discuss the federal government’s recent response to Australia’s mental health crisis.

Speaking at the inaugural event for new national grassroots advocacy group, Australians for Mental Health, National Mental Health Commission chair Prof. Fels and former Australian of the Year Prof. McGorry will be joined by popular comedian Tom Ballard (MC), Fairfax journalist Jill Stark, business leader Geoff Wilson and Australians for Mental Health community taskforce member, Prerna Diksha.

Australians for Mental Health (AFMH) is a community-driven, national campaign empowering everyday Australians to advocate for mental health reform.

AFMH aims to give community a voice in Australia’s mental health debate, and has developed this special event to welcome everyday Australian perspectives into the mental health conversation.

While it welcomes the Federal Government’s recent announcement, AFMH remains committed to holding the government to account on the issue of mental health and the chronic shortage of funding and services in this area.

Prof. Fels said he was looking forward to a robust discussion and to hear his fellow panellists’ views on the government response to the review by his National Mental Health Commission.

“There is no better time than now to have this conversation and ensure the voices of the community are being heard when it comes to the implementation of real and meaningful change in Australia’s mental health system,” Prof. Fels said.

Fellow panellist and AFMH community taskforce member, Prerna Diksha, said the event would be a valuable opportunity to stir community discussion.

“Mental health is an issue as complex as it is important. I’m hopeful this panel, representing diverse perspectives, will make the mental health conversation accessible to all Australians,” Ms Diksha said.
